Oklahoma Hopes to Exercise Bowl Game Demons

Congratulations to the Oklahoma Sooners on their immanent birth into the 2009 BCS Championship game! Now hopefully for college football fans, they don’t embarrass themselves on College Football’s biggest stage, the way they have done three of the last four seasons in bowl games.

For those of you just tuning in: Last year’s OU, shock and awe operation took place at the Fiesta Bowl. There, they met a West Virgina Mountaineer program, who had just lost their head coach in a situation that had Mountaineer fans  breathing into brown paper bags and over using the word, “betrayal”, (Finding your best friend having sex with your wife is “betrayal”, not having a head coach leaving your program for more money). Going in favorites, OU stunk up the place, in a game where after  two and a half quarters, the only people still watching were WVU fans who took off the next day of work and people who enjoy watching street fights on youtube.

In 2007’s version of the Fiesta Bowl, Oklahoma lost to a Boise State team in one of the greatest college football games you’ll ever see. A game in which will no doubt be referenced in many a coaches’, “David v. Goliath” locker room speech. As if being on the losing side of history isn’t bad enough- Oklahoma lost on two trick plays in overtime. As if  losing on a couple plays that would even be deemed, ‘too risky’, in your annual touch football game isn’t bad enough- OU had to watch a celebration that included the man who scored the winning touchdown, proposing to his cheerleader girlfriend…How Hollywood. How embarrassing- and how worth another look the highlights to that game are.

And I don’t really need to go into much detail about the school’s performance in the 2005 FedEx Orange Bowl, where the final score of 55-19, tells the whole story. But with due respect to the Sooners that night,  USC was heavy favorites, and had one of the most talented teams in College Football’s history (Probably tied with the 2001 Miami Hurricanes who stared 16 NFL picks in that year’s draft, and an eventual 23 future NFL players overall).

So with all that being said, The Sooners go into January 8th’s, BCS Championship game, against a Flordia Gators team who has momentum, and the best college quarterback we’ve seen in years, Tim Tebow. And all Oklahoma has to do is beat an SEC team in a national title game. Something that Ohio State fans know is highly difficult- and where the level of embarrassment can be so high, that you’re likely to receive phone calls from friends about how embarrassing of a defeat your team has taken, till the end of next summer.

On paper, yes- the Sooners have a shot. They’ve looked very impressive in the last few weeks, with convincing wins vs. Texas Tech and Missouri. And their Quarterback, Sam Bradford, has the sort of guts and courage that leads underdog teams to upsets. But as Tim Tebow mentioned, when asked about his Heisman chances to Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson prior to leading his team to the SEC Championship, “Boy would I like to throw against some of those Big 12 defenses”. And there in lies the truth about this upcoming game. Tebow can make a comment like that, and without any sort of hesitation or dispute, people know what he’s talking about, the SEC is far superior to the rest of college football.

Oklahoma’s best chance? Hope Tim Tebow slips in the shower and hurts his ankle.

Lets hope for our viewing pleasure, I’m dead wrong.

  1. I am proud of your blog but insulted by your WVU comments. I am a dedicated school employee who only took a 1/2 day off after the victory and if Torre would have left during a World Series run you would feel betrayed. As for Oklahoma, they play in a defenseless league and Florida plays in the the best conference in college football. Final Florida 38 Oklahoma 24. Love ya.

  2. Seth it’s time to come down from the mountains and stop smoking from your corn-cob pipe. Big 12 was the better division this year and it’s Texas not Oklahoma that should be in the title game. With that said BCS, blows like the coal miner’s daughter and instead of just glopping teams together, like tobbacy and spit, better match-ups would have been Texas-USC, Penn St.-Ohio St., even Alabama -Oklahoma would have been good. Instead they put Cinn. -V Tech together, geez. That’s almost as bad as when Zoolander went home to work the mines w/ pop. You know what I mean Seth? ; 0 To be honest if you want to see some exciting football watch my boys from Buffalo do the smokey mountain top stomp on UConn. Hey Danny, good stuff, I will write more once baseball trades start going through. Seth, I miss you man, hope all is well.

  3. Wow! have you become the Big 12 homer. The Big 12 had a good year for a non-defensive conference. Yes, Texas over Ok but USC, Florida and Alabama beat all your teams in the Big 12. It is about time you leave the 3rd world country of Texas and come to a more civilized nation. I watched Buffalo last week and what a job they did over overated Ball St. I am so proud of Danny and his wonderful articles keep up the great job and “J” I miss you buddy and the knee basketbal games. I wonder if the old lady with the broom is dead. CC better pan out!

  4. Good stuff Danny, to me, every year since that title game back in 2001, Eric Crouch’s Cornhuskers against that Amazing 2001 Hurricanes team, it seems most of the time the team that should be in that game isn’t. That year it was that Oregon team with Joey Harrington, a few years ago Auburn with Jason Campbell, and this year there’s no way anyone can tell me Texas shouldn’t have been there. And Mccoy shouldn’t have one the Heisman, he led his team in rushing, come the hell on. Texas beat Oklahoma on a neutral field, and only lost to tech cause that corner couldn’t catch lollipop. Florida was impressive vs Bama, but they lost to Ole Miss, which the last few years since my boy Eli has been gone, no offense has been more like Old piss. Ohio State was dumb, they should have worked there current qb in the preseason, that way they might have had a chance against USC. Rutgers, all I’ll say is if they had played the way they have played the last 2-3 weeks all season, they’d be in the title game, no doubt. Buffalo was impressive this season bro, that hail mary play, skills. I am disgusted by conference champ bids, how can you have a orange bowl with virginia tech and cincinnati? Boise State 12-0, yeah there not a big time school, but their record against them in a bcs game is 1-0. Virginia tech in a bcs game with 4 losses is pathetic to me, we NEED a playoff system. SETH! Haven’t seen you in forever, how have you been? Keep up the great work Danny, I love the blog, great pics. Especially a-rod with the cigar. Later folks.
